A while ago my classmates and I did a blog on magazine cover research. For that we took photos of the cover, table of contents, and two pages of two magazines for each genre that we were choosing. This assignment I am going to be distinguishing the differences and the similarities in between the table of contents of the two magazines of my final genre, art & design.

First magazine: What Women Create

  • Number of Images: 6. There being 2 on the first and 4 on the second one.

  • Description of Images: The images are tools of yarn, art books/journals, fabric, a crocheted person, and an artist on the ground looking at her art.

  • List of Sections: 3

  • Number of Articles: 11

  • Highest Page Number: 136

  • Number of Columns for Page: 1

  • Title of Page: CONTENTS

  • Articles Font Format: Serif and fixed width

  • Color Palette of Fonts: blue for section title and black for article titles

  • Stylistic Feature: all the images scattered around everywhere with the space remaining the articles are placed there in one column.

Second magazine: Modern Luxury Miami

  • Number of Images: 4 (2 on each page).

  • Description of Images: one is a plate of food, another a canvas with art on it, then a table with gold utensils and decorations set neatly on it, and a women modeling for a jewelry piece.

  • List of Sections: 4

  • Number of Articles: 22

  • Highest Page Number: 142

  • Number of Columns for Page: first page has one column, and the second page has three of them.

  • Title of Page: TABLE OF CONTENTS

  • Articles Font Format: Serif

  • Color Palette of Fonts: Everything is in black

  • Stylistic Feature: Everything is organized and placed neatly with the images and the articles being in a straight line along each other sides.

Similarities

What they have in common is one how they both use Serif as their fonts and have it in black for the majority part. Another thing is that they both show a variety of images of different materials that are in going to be in the magazine. Then for each image they have a number put in the top or bottom corner from which article they are from. Though they also have the title of the page placed on the side of the page, big and bold.

Differences

Though they do have something in common with their title they have different fonts. The first one has their section titles in a font called Fixed Width and for the article titles is called San Serif. Then the second magazine has everything in the font San Serif. Their main difference is that one is more elegant and neater than the other. A thing that's different about their images though is that the first magazine set them out like a collage. Having some larger than others meanwhile the second magazine has them all big and aligned. A detail that's different between their articles is that the second one has more information behind it unlike the first one says it straight forward only the name.

I like the first magazine better and I will be using that as a reference for when it comes to my time to do my table of contents. I would like to see it out organized but at same time with a touch of things around the page to show the creative, silly, artistic way of art. I'll also test out my titles with different colors to try to make it look fun. Another thing I'll have in common with the first magazine is the main subject of the images. I'm going to add the tools and materials that I'm going to be offering that are best to use while doing art pieces.
